Frequently Asked Questions

How much do classes cost?
Individual classes are $12 each, or you may purchase 5 classes for $50, or 10 classes for $90. These savings packages are ticket books. They do not expire, and can be used for any class at any time. Students are never charged for classes they do not attend.
Do I have to pay in advance?
Yes. Payment is taken before classtime. We accept checks and cash only in Longwood location and we accept all major credit cards in our Winter Park studio and store.
What do I wear to class?
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. Typically, students wear clothing that either allows the belly to show, or fits tightly in that area. This allows the instructor to see if the movements are being done correctly. Harem pants, large skirts, stretch pants, bicycle shorts, body suits, or any other athletic wear is also suitable. Some students enjoy dressing in a more exotic attire for class...feel free to be creative! A hip scarf or coin belt can also be a helpful tool to emphasize movement. Suspira provides extra hipscarves for class, but feel free to bring your own if you have one.
What do I wear on my feet?
Nothing! Bellydance is generally performed with bare feet. However, socks or any soft soled dance shoe are permitted in class.
How are classes set up?
Classes are set up into different levels. As a beginning student, even with prior dance experience in other dance forms, you will need to start in our beginning level classes to learn all the movements in our artform. Enrollment is open for about a month when a class begins. The class then closes to new students, and will continue on with the curriculum until the course finishes. This generally takes about 3 months. When students have completed all the lessons in the beginner class, they are asked to move on to the intermediate level. Lessons should always be slightly challenging, so class placement is important to keep students constantly learning and motivated. Our instructors will help you to know when it is time to advance, but generally classes advance to the next level as a group.
What do we do in class?
Classes generally include: warm-up, isolation drills, hipwork review, new step segment, finger cymbal practice, and a slow step/hand and armwork segment and cooldown. Beginner and intermediate students also learn the art of veil dancing and floorwork. Intermediate classes also include learning choreography, and training in dancing freestyle.
What happens if I miss a class?
No problem. Come to the next one!
Do we need to bring anything to class?
The only thing you will need is your practice clothes, and bottled water. Be prepared to get sweaty!
How long will it take me to get "good"?
Progress really depends on one thing... Practice! Every student is different. You will surprise yourself! Private lessons are available for students who are very motivated and wish to dramatically improve their dancing skills.
Can I take just one class to see if I like it?
Sure! There is no obligation no contractually one class, and decide for yourself if it is something you'd like to continue.
Can I "preview" a class, and then if I like it, join the following week?
Because many women are taking classes to improve their body image and self esteem, some students feel uncomfortable have people "watch" them dance. Instead of "previewing" a class, we ask that interested students to be simply take a single class. The cost is $12, and there is absolutely no obligation to join classes afterwards if you do not care for it. It is also better than viewing a class for the interested student, because they can tell if the class "feels" right to them, and if the teaching methods work for them in particular.
Can I take the Beginner and Intermediate classes at the same time?
You may take both classes at the same time if you've already taken the beginning class and want to double up, or if you have had bellydance instruction before somewhere else. If you are new to bellydancing, it is better to stick with the beginner class and master your technique.
I've studied bellydance before with another instructor...
should I start in the beginner class since I'll have a new instructor?
Probably not. First try the beginner class and see how comfortable you feel.
What "style" of bellydance do you teach?
Orlando Bellydance focuses on authentic Middle Eastern Bellydance, often called "Egyptian Cabaret." This is the true form of bellydance that is still performed in Arabic countries to this day. In addition, general overviews, as well as stylized choreographies flavored with other types of bellydance are taught in class by Suspira as well. Advanced students also learn to dance with props.....swords, daggers, fans, veils, double veils, canes, etc. Creativity and "finding your own voice" is strongly encouraged. We want students to become the dancer THEY want to be.
Should I just take private lessons? Won't I get better, faster?
Well, that really depends on your goals. Group lessons are set up in a way that every student does get personalized attention every class. Usually, while learning the basics, it is just as effective to take group classes, especially if the student practices what is learned in class at home. Later on, especially if the student is looking to perform professionally, private lessons are encouraged to help "fine tune" a students style, technique, and performance.
Do we get to perform?
All students will have the opportunity to perform (if they so desire) at our semi-annual bellydance showcases entitled "An Evening Unveiled" which has now become the largest bellydance showcase in the state of Florida, as well as at our studio parties. The only requirment is completing level one. Orlando Bellydance is also home to the performing groups, "Troupe Ahlaam", "Serpentina Dance Company", "Gypsy Sa'har" and "Orlando Dance Theatre." Members of these groups are chosen every six months, and perform on a regular basis at various events such as Arabic restaurants, festivals, charity events, SCA and Ren Faire engagements, television broadcasts, parties and conventions. To become a troupe member, you must complete the Beginning and Intermediate courses, and be selected at a formal audition held twice a year. If a dancer has prior Middle Eastern Dance training, however, it is possible for them to be exempt from completing these courses, but they must first have the instructor's permission to join.
How old do I have to be to take class?
Students must be in junior highschool or older to attend adult group classes. This is to aid in the "girls night out" feel of classes. Private lessons can be arranged for younger students. Contact Suspira for futher details . We also offer "Mommy and Me" classes which is a great way to spend quality time with your daughter while learning this beautiful artform.
Am I too old to take class? Or too heavy?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Bellydance is the one dance form that celebrates all ages, body types, and ethnic backgrounds! Classes are no exception. We have all types of women, from every walk of life! It is a wonderful time for women to come together and celebrate their femininity and uniqueness.
Will I lose weight if I bellydance?
You will find that bellydance is a wonderful excercise, and if you are concerned with your weight, a perfect way to lose a few pounds! Students have reported weight loss of 50 pounds and MORE with bellydance as their only form of excercise!
Can Men take class?
While Men certainly can bellydance, classes with Orlando Bellydance are designed for women only. This is because some students are not able to dance in front of men due to their religious beliefs, and others are uncomfortable showing their bodies in front of the opposite sex. If you are a male looking for an instructor, please email Suspira directly and she would be more than happy to help you find one.
How many students are in each class?
It varies, but ALL students are given individual attention. Each class has a minimum of 1 assistant teacher and demonstrator to further assist students in their learning.
How do I enroll in class?
To enroll in class, you may email Suspira or call Orlando Bellydance at: 407-579-9765 or 407-738-3814.
